Dr. Beverly Joyce

Welcome! I’m happy you’re here!

A little about me. I’ve been a practicing obstetrician-gynecologist in the San Francisco Bay Area for 30+ years, during which I’ve delivered thousands of babies. As my patients started aging and experiencing hormonal changes, weight gain, mood changes, and bleeding abnormalities, I found myself struggling to help them in a way that felt satisfying to both of us. Since I was also experiencing perimenopausal issues, I decided to get better educated and devlop experitise in menopause and perimenopause, sexual health, nutrition, exercise, and weight management.

Surprisingly, when I started having anxiety, palpitations, weight gain,  rage, and memory issues myself, I didn’t realize right away what was happening. And, it was very disconcerting when I could not multitask or  remember where I put my phone, keys, grocery list, or why I came into a room. I told my husband I thought I was getting dementia.

It was only after much research, and becoming Menopause Society certified, that I began to understand all the changes in every part of a woman’s body, particularly the brain, that happen as a result of declining and/or fluctuating estrogen levels.

I will work with you, one-on-one, to navigate these changes and design a mutually satisfying treatment plan. I practice evidence-based medicine, using FDA-approved therapies (with a few exceptions), and will address all aspects of health and wellness, including nutrition, exercise, mental health, sexuality, and burnout, to get you feeling your best self!

Menopause care from the comfort of your own home!

Menopause Care designed for you...

I am a board-certified physician in Obstetrics & Gynecology, and hold a certification from The Menopause Society. I  use evidence-based guidelines and safe practices, designed with your specific needs in mind. I prescribe medications for patients in California, but can advise women from anywhere on the most up-to-date treatment options for perimenpause and menopause.

Why Telehealth?

I've discovered over the past few years that most of menopause management revolves around listening and conversation. I listen to your whole story, non-judgmentally, and with an open mind to help us co-create a treatment plan that is individualized to you. I am not taking the place of your primary physician. If an exam is necessary, I will advise you what ask for and where to go.

Why I don't take Insurance...

Insurance-based care limits the time I get to spend with patients. I want to give you as much time as you need, over as many visits as you need, to make you feel confident in your care plan. You are free to use your FSA or HSA funds. And, of course, you may use your insurance for any labs or imaging that we deem appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your philosopy of care?

I LISTEN. I ask questions that other doctors don’t ask, because they’re worried it might take too long to explore. I take time to explain things so that you understand. I want to know what is most important to you! I follow guidelines from the largest and most trusted organizations, and also use common sense and shared decision-making with you.

Estradiol, Progesterone, and Testosterone are the same hormones made in the body, so yes, I prescribe these. Sometimes other synthetic hormone products might be recommended, however, depending on the situation. For example, for bleeding control, a birth control pill, IUD, or synthetic progestin might be best. Regardless, everything I prescribe is FDA-approved. I do not recommend or prescribe pellet therapy. Rarely, primarily in case of an allergy, I might prescribe a compounded product.

GLP-1 medications are an amazing addition to the weight management space, and they are particularly effective in perimenopause and menopause. After a thorough discussion of your weight loss goals, and if it is appropriate, I will prescribe it. However, I do not have staff to do prior authorizations if the medication is denied by your insurance. Direct to consumer Zepbound through Lilly Direct and Wegovy through NovoCare are available and I am happy to prescribe through those avenues.

Please feel free to email me through the contact form at the bottom of the page. I will email you back within 2 business days in most cases.

Available in print, Kindle, and audiobook versions.

Praise for The Birth of Joy

As a fellow OBGYN and fertility doctor, I found "The Birth of Joy" by Beverly Joyce, MD. to be a deeply relatable and inspiring read. Her honest and vulnerable account of navigating burnout, childhood trauma, and the quest for professional fulfillment resonated with me on multiple levels. The vulnerability she displays in sharing her story is a refreshing contrast to the traditional facade of perfection expected within the medical field. I wholeheartedly believe that more physicians should embrace vulnerability and share their personal experiences. By doing so, we can create a more supportive environment for ourselves and our colleagues, ultimately leading to improved patient care and well-being for everyone involved. I believe this book is a must-read for any healthcare professional seeking to rediscover passion and navigate the challenges of a demanding career. Dr. Joyce's courage and honesty in sharing her story offer valuable lessons and inspiration for us all. ~Sara Vaughn, MD

5 STARS: Amazon Reviewer

In this book of self-reflection, Dr. Joyce is both vulnerable and strong. I received the story as conversational and intimate, which might be ironic considering her self-confessed aversion to intimate conversation! Really glad to have met the author through coaching social circles, and to have the opportunity to read her story. I have no doubt she will continue to change the world in her next career chapter!
