Why You Need a Menopause Specialist (Not Just Any Gynecologist)

Here’s something most women don’t know: perimenopause can start 7–10 years before your last period — and it rarely announces itself with a hot flash. Dry eyes, itchy ears, anxiety, heart palpitations, a frozen shoulder, waking up at 3am for no reason — these are hormone symptoms. Most doctors miss them entirely.

That’s not a dig at your primary care doctor or your beloved OB who delivered your kids. Menopause just isn’t something most physicians are trained to manage in depth. It’s a specialty, and it matters enormously that you see someone who treats it as one.

What a menopause specialist actually does differently

A Menopause Society-certified physician doesn’t just hand you a prescription and send you on your way. I’m trained to see the full picture — how hormonal changes affect your sleep, your mood, your metabolism, your heart health, your sex life, and your sense of self. Those things are connected, and treating them well requires both expertise and time.

Time is actually one of the biggest differences. Standard OB/GYN appointments aren’t built for the kind of conversation menopause requires. In my practice, appointments are longer and focused entirely on you — your history, your symptoms, your goals. We talk through everything.

The right treatment for you — not a one-size-fits-all script

Menopause hormone therapy (MHT) is safe and highly effective for most women, and the outdated fears around it have largely been debunked. But it’s not the only option, nor the only intervention, and the best approach depends on your individual health history and what matters most to you. I’ll walk you through what the evidence actually says, answer your questions honestly, and help you make a decision that fits your life. We also don’t stop at “here’s your prescription.” We’ll have as many follow-ups as you need and address lifestyle factors including nutrition, exercise, sleep and sexual health.

The bottom line

You don’t have to white-knuckle this transition or accept “this is just part of aging.” With the right care, most women feel dramatically better. That’s what I’m here for.
